Made-to-measure leather bench cushion or seat cushion in black, brown & cognac

For the dining bench, the hallway bench or the window seat: we make this bench cushion to your exact measurements. On top, milled cowhide with a deep, bold grain; underneath, wool felt in the colour of your choice. Firmly padded and gently domed. Along the edge you can see the full thickness of the leather, with the felt beneath it adding a fine line of colour.

Your leather cushion, made to measure

You enter length and width in 1 cm steps. Sizes from 25 × 30 cm up to 270 × 80 cm are possible. You also choose:

• Leather colour for the top: black, brown or cognac
• Felt colour for the underside: 19 colours
• Corners: square or rounded with a radius of approx. 30 mm
• Underside optionally with a non-slip coating made of natural latex, so the cushion stays in place on smooth benches

The leather: vegetable-tanned cowhide

We cut our bench cushions from sides, i.e. half cowhides: approx. 3.5 mm thick, vegetable-tanned heavy leather from a family-run tannery in southern Germany that has been making leather since 1888, regionally and sustainably, from the raw hides to the tanning agents. A special milling process (tumbling) gives the leather its distinctive grain and makes it pleasantly soft.

Across a half hide, the grain pattern changes. In some places it is calm and even, in others more lively, with the natural creases and markings of the animal. This is not a flaw; it is exactly what makes genuine leather special. Over time it develops a beautiful patina and darkens.

On large bench cushions we join the leather with a flat-felled seam

A cowhide is large, but not endlessly so. Up to about 45 to 60 cm in length or width, we cut the top from a single piece. For larger bench cushions, we join the leather from several pieces, always using as few as possible. We decide where the seams go for each cushion individually, depending on its size and on how the hide has grown. The pieces are joined with a flat-felled seam: the edges are folded over and topstitched on both sides. It is a classic saddler's seam and particularly hard-wearing.

Padding and underside

Beneath the leather is 20 mm foam of grade RG 5078. With a density of 50 kg/m³, it is especially dense: the cushion will not flatten with use, keeps its shape for years and holds the leather taut and nicely domed. From a length of 205 cm, the padding consists of two parts, while the seat surface remains continuous.

The underside is made of 3 mm wool felt (100% virgin wool, made in Germany). It insulates against cold from below and lets the air escape from the padding.

Each bench cushion is made to your specifications in size, colour, corner shape and underside. As a custom-made item, it is therefore excluded from exchange and return.
